Is temperature a factor?

Spur inserts are used in very unfriendly thermal atmospheres. Some cryogenic applications have called for our inserts to carry liquid Hydrogen. Some customers use our products in temperatures reaching over 400C and have for 25 years. The bond interface can be damaged by excessive heat, but typically the bond will withstand temperatures beyond the structural usefulness of aluminum.

Why Spur Industries roll bonded inserts?

We consider roll-bonded cladding a superior choice because of the control we have over the procedure. Due to the rolling process and its simple mechanics (the roller being wider than the bar) we know the same pressure is being applied over the width of the entire bar, therefore avoiding the pockets and voids that occur through other methods of joinery. Whether your insert comes from the nose, middle, or tail of one of our rolled bar, the integrity of the bond will not be compromised assuring you a consistently reliable product.

Can I weld Spur inserts?

Yes, this is most often the case. Spur Industries provides specific welding procedures upon request so even the novice welder can be trained to fit up our products without the fear of damaging the insert. By simply following good welding practices and avoiding extreme temperature abuse, high strength and indefinite service life can be maintained.

Can I get inserts in any size?

Our customers generally request inserts that are cut, and ready to use (typically 8"-9" across and .5"-24" long). Thickness of our inserts has ranged from 0.100" to 3.500". Please contact us regarding your application and let us work to determine a custom dimension that will best work for you.

Can inserts be machined or formed?

Inserts can be machined and wrought (i.e. twisted and pulled) to a significant degree before the different metals physical properties seriously effect the bond. Spur Industries also has an on-site CNC machine shop with lathes and mills to drill, bend, machine, cut, weld and surface inserts for very precise applications. Let our fabrication specialists' help you fit and form our inserts for your sub-assemblies.

How much does a transition insert cost?

Pricing depends on quantity, size and the complexity of your insert's design. It is our goal to provide you with the part you need at a price that will give you incentive to allow us to work for you. Please contact us with your application and we will be happy to work with you on costs.
